What is Positive Therapy in simpler terms explained by 7 practicing psihologists.

Ukrainian therapists describe how positive therapy works.

Positive psychotherapy is a pleasant scientific method of short-term therapy (6-15 sessions). The author's name of the psychotherapeutic concept, developed since 1972 by N. Pezeshkian and his son H. Pezeshkian, draws attention to the origin of the term from the Latin positum - “taking place, really existing”, and not from positivum - “positive”, thereby emphasizing the need to study both positive and negative aspects of the problem and a person’s life, expanding his worldview.
It is based on creating internal and external harmony of a person, revealing his abilities and developing the “correct” response to a difficult situation for him, finding a solution, setting a goal, finding a way to achieve a goal.In the process of therapy, the client learns to become his own therapist!
n The method allows you to use various techniques and methodologies, including those from related areas, such as verbal techniques (pronunciation), question-answer, balance model, current abilities questionnaire (DAQ), visualization techniques, work with drawings (elements of art therapy ), diagrams, images, metaphors, parables, anecdotes...
When working with a client, a balance is achieved between the human sides of “Love” and “Know”, because Each Person initially has a desire for Knowledge and a desire for Love.
The method is suitable for solving various issues (from personal, internal feelings to external, interpersonal relationships), as well as when working with psychosomatic and chronic diseases.

Work in the method of positive psychotherapy is based on the principle that all people from birth are endowed with basic abilities - for love and knowledge. Of these, in the process of development, learning, under the influence of living conditions, actual abilities that shape the character and uniqueness of each person, because everyone has them developed to their own degree.Perhaps some actual ability is overdeveloped, and some is still in its infancy, hence an imbalance arises - which is what work with a psychologist is designed to eliminate. In addition, in positive psychotherapy there is a concept about the spheres of distribution of vital energy and processing of conflicts - the sphere of the body, activity, contacts and meanings. Someone in a conflict situation will go into care or, on the contrary, will abandon their body (this is care or lack thereof in sleep, food, health, etc.), activity (flight to work or apathy towards everything), contacts (limit contacts or, on the contrary, go to “parties”) and into the sphere of meanings and fantasies (loss of meaning in life or, conversely, retreat into dreams). For an effective life, all areas need to be brought into balance, to see your resources and opportunities to achieve what you want.
This is a method of short-term therapy, has a clear algorithm of work and allows you to use techniques from other schools of psychotherapy along with classical positive therapy techniques.

Imagine a person who stands in the middle of the square on one leg. Very soon the muscles of the overloaded leg begin to cramp, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain balance, and the muscles of the whole body are tense due to the uncomfortable position. The pain becomes unbearable, the man cries for help. Those around him respond to his call. One massages the leg on which the unfortunate man continues to stand. Another tries to work out the stiff neck muscles. The third, seeing that the man is about to fall, offers him a hand for support. Finally , another one appears, approaches the poor fellow and asks: “Why are you standing on one leg? You have a second one. Stand on it.”

The client brings with him to the appointment not only his problem, but also ability to overcome it. The task of the psychotherapist is to help him in this.

In the process of positive psychotherapy, the CLIENT LEARNS:

to see the positive sides of the conflict, violation, illness;

to see the paths that led him to this situation;

find internal resources,
pay attention to other aspects of his life;

see the ability behind a conflict, violation, illness,
talk about what was initially painful,
openly discuss conflicting aspects of the relationship with a partner;

find resources and ways resolving conflicts,
finding other life goals,
becoming a therapist for yourself and your environment,
coping with life’s difficulties independently.

In the counseling process, parables, metaphors, and exercises from other psychotherapeutic theories.

Positive psychotherapy, developed by Nosrat Pezeshkian, is an innovative approach to personality development and improvement of interpersonal relationships. The main principles of this system include a positive approach, a meaningful approach and the use of a five-step model in therapy.
An important aspect is the creation of a positive image of a person, which serves as a basis for the development of friendship and mutual understanding, despite cultural differences. Pezeshkian emphasizes the development of healthy potentials and actual abilities, using differential analysis and differential analytical questionnaire.
The goal of positive psychotherapy is to establish a general diagnosis and identify the client's healthy potential to promote recovery and adaptation to change. This system focuses on the healthy strengths of the client, viewing disorders as opportunities for development and discovery of abilities. Positive psychotherapy emphasizes the importance of developing unexplored abilities and opportunities, helping to understand the essence of problems.

We can reduce the story about positive therapy to actual abilities (values ??and “points”), to four areas of response to conflict (body, activity, contacts and fantasy) ... Or you can go by , in which lies the deep wisdom of this approach - through parables and associations.

"Positive" does not mean thoughtlessly positive, through rose-colored glasses. Positum translated from Latin is objective, real. And the task of working in The positive key of the therapist is to help the client see the true state of things. This is an association with a landowner who bought new lands, came down from the mountains to them, and then the fog clears in front of him, and he sees: what does he have in stock? And then he, of course, will manage his resources for the benefit of himself and his loved ones.

What I like about positive psychotherapy:

- The opportunity to trace the sources of certain behavioral characteristics and reactions of the client, to help understand and realize them

- The positive approach is not limited to explanations alone. The therapist inspires the client to take new steps, changes, actions, and also helps to develop a plan to improve the situation

- A positive approach makes you look at the problem from a completely new perspective, sometimes the opposite of the one with which you came. And the client, with surprise and relief, finds an unexpected way out

- The language of parables, full of oriental charm, like a subtle pattern, penetrates the conversation and intertwines with it, bringing a little magic to every meeting.

Regards and positive

Positive psychotherapy is aimed at mobilizing a person’s internal resources to make positive decisions in any, even the most difficult life situations.

A positive approach does not mean interpreting the world through “ rose-colored glasses." A positive approach is a position, a given, available at a given moment in time. Positive is realistic and constructive, and not naively rosy.

Positive psychotherapy is a method that gives knowledge about a person , teaches not to fight with the world around us, but to accept it in all its diversity.

Everything is in your hands
Eastern parable

Once upon a time in the old days In the city lived a Master, surrounded by students. The most capable of them once thought: “Is there a question that our Master could not answer?” He went to a flowering meadow, caught the most beautiful butterfly and hid it between his palms. for his hands, and the student was ticklish. Smiling, he approached the Master and asked:
- Tell me, what kind of butterfly is in my hands: alive or dead?
He held the butterfly tightly in his closed palms and was ready to squeeze them at any moment for the sake of your truth.
Without looking at the student’s hands, the Master replied:
- Everything is in your hands.

Positive psychotherapy as a method is designed to help a person not get lost in the stream of rapid events of the era, find yourself and believe that just as a bird was born to fly, so a person was created for a happy life.
