Client-centered Therapy. Explained in simpler terms.

Psychotherapy methods » Client-centered Therapy

What is Client-centered Therapy in simpler terms explained by 7 practicing psihologists.

Ukrainian therapists describe how client-centered therapy works.

Carl Rogers' client-centered therapy has little in common with psychoanalysis and behaviorism. It was developed by the author over several years, constantly developing and expanding with new practical methods. Initially, Rogers' approach to therapy was called non-directive, which reflected its author's interest in methods that can change behavior. Carl Rogers suggested that a person is able to change his personality, then the psychotherapist can be less directive in his relationship with him.

Later Carl Rogers emphasized methods that allowed the therapist to better understand what was happening to the patient during the treatment process, an approach that was later renamed “client-centered”, which emphasized his core idea of ??understanding the client’s self-perception.

Rogers assigned the main role in his approach to the relationship between the therapist and the patient, as the most important condition for effective treatment.

Yesterday, while working with a client, we found out that when visiting the previous psychologist, she found it uncomfortable to work according to his plan, she felt misunderstood.
Client-centered therapy, to me It seems that this is when it is not the client who follows our ideas about his internal content, but we (psychologists) are guided by what our ideas are suitable for the client’s process.
The positive thing is that it is easy to establish contact with the client.
The problem is that the client is in every possible way defends his sore subject and the correction in this way can be based on the client’s defense mechanisms.
The way out is not to take on topics that are sore for the psychologist and the client at the same time.
p.s. What to take on??? :)))

A client-centered psychotherapist does not direct the client, does not indicate what should and should not be done, since each person is free in his choice.
Efforts of the psychotherapist are aimed at the personal growth of the patient, and not just at treating any symptom or disease.

All areas of psychotherapy work for the benefit of the client. The essence of the client-centered approach is in the relationship between the client and the psychotherapist. The latter is a person who accepts, understands, and accompanies the client in the process " getting to know oneself, one's own growth and changes. At the same time, the psychotherapist himself is sincere and open towards the client. There is no assessment, but there is ACCEPTANCE. Communication occurs at the level of the soul. The psychotherapist creates conditions in which the client can safely talk about feelings , not just about important events in our own lives, but about the feelings that they cause. After all, we often hide our true feelings for various reasons, and this prevents us from being who we are - free and happy, able to realize all our potentials and achieve goals.
In such conditions, the client himself gains the experience of being his true self and at the same time does not feel evaluation, condemnation, etc. Then changes are possible - in order to hide your resentment, you don’t need anger, to hide anger, you don’t need to pretend . You can just try to articulate your feelings and attitudes so that they do not accumulate in the form of “body blocks” or insomnia, or feelings of dissatisfaction and illness.
A person who accepts himself with all his “baggage” is more capable than others of a fully harmonious life.
Of course, everything is a little more complicated, but these are some of the important postulates of the client-centered approach to psychotherapy - sincerity, unconditional acceptance, empathy and treatment souls.

This is a non-directive type of psychotherapy, that is, it does not imply any strictly regulated rules and restrictions. The basis of client-centered therapy is the belief that the person When seeking help from a psychologist, a person actually knows how to solve the problems that concern him, and the therapist’s task is only to help him realize this and reveal his potential.
The work of a psychotherapist with a client takes place in the form of a dialogue that is established between the client and the therapist. There are 3 main conditions for successful therapeutic contact in client-centered therapy: 1) unconditional, non-judgmental acceptance (the therapist completely accepts the client as he is, listens carefully, reacts to what he says, but does not evaluate); 2) empathy (the ability to accurately perceive the feelings of the interlocutor and empathize with them); 3) congruence (the ability to recognize and express one’s own feelings at the current moment). The very presence of an attentive, open, understanding interlocutor helps a person cope with anxieties, instills confidence in his abilities and helps him find a way to overcome the problem that concerns him.
It is assumed that the client is the best person to cope with his personal problems. In fact, the therapist, with his unobtrusive statements (usually clarifying questions, requests to reformulate what was said, etc., they do not contain reflection, advice, instructions, moralizing) gradually, imperceptibly for the clients themselves, directs their discussion in the direction that he himself believes appropriate.

We live among a large crowd of people for whom the bureaucratic way of life seems more rational and fair. Unfortunately, in such a world the person himself is lost, purely human qualities are suppressed.
American psychotherapist Carl Rogers saw a way out of destructive systems - in the sphere of human relationships. This psychotherapy is focused not on a problem or theory, but on the personality of another person.
The position of the psychotherapist is that he does not play the role of an “omniscient" and “all-understanding”, does not hide behind a “mask” or “facade”, but is himself, clearly and accurately reports his conscious experiences and perceptions. Thanks to empathy, he tries to feel the client’s world, how he feels in this world. And one more important moment in relation to the client there is unconditional, non-judgmental acceptance.
This psychotherapy is not a set of specific “techniques”, it is more like a way of existing with the client.
I was lucky enough to hear at consultations, even from older people, that no one listened to them so carefully, few people were interested in their lives. And believe me, this is very important! If a psychotherapist manages to build a trusting, safe relationship with a client, based on respect, faith, understanding and a positive attitude towards him, the client becomes able to understand his needs and desires without extraneous “noise”. He is moving towards psychological maturity and responsibility not only for his actions, but also for his way of being.
