What is Psychodrama Therapy in simpler terms explained by 5 practicing psihologists.

Ukrainian therapists describe how psychodrama therapy works.

Elements of psychodrama are included in the work in cases where it is necessary to play out pent-up affects, that is, to give vent to emotional states. As assistants, in the process of apperception, I use toys, drawings, any constructive material, if the work takes place in a group, then the help of other participants is important.

Elena Georgievna Maksimenko

Psychodrama is a theatrical presentation of a complex, problematic life situation. The situation can be taken from the past (but still exciting), from a dream, from fantasy, from pre-pubescence, etc. It is clear that for psychodrama it is better to use the resource of a group than a client-consultant. The production is carried out by the person whose situation we will stage, but the psychologist - the presenter helps to highlight the key moments and key characters. The roles are chosen by the director himself, but other group members can offer their own candidates. The same fragment can be staged several (2-3) times. In general, you can vary it. The result can be amazing! A completely new experience, a different dimension, understanding opens up before the group members. A person always has a gap between what he says, and what he does, and what he thinks about it. In the process of psychodrama, this gap becomes obvious. The feelings present in this situation are made more obvious and definite. That psychological material that was inaccessible to conscious consideration “floats” to the surface.

For me, Psychodrama is an opportunity to make changes in your life. To become Whole, to integrate broken, crushed, repressed parts. To live in an hour of astronomical time is five years of psychological time. To get in touch with the world another person, to visit him, to live with him, to live life as he lives, and to get a chance to love a Person for one thing, that he is a Person. To hear your heart, desires, dreams. To try something that is not possible in real life. And etc., etc., etc....

To tell you a little more theoretically, Psychodrama is built on feelings. A person goes on stage and demonstrates his image: gestures, facial expressions, voice, feelings, thoughts. And this causes a lot different emotions in him and the audience. Psychodrama allows us to clearly see ourselves, our limitations and cliches. There is an expression - “cultural canned food” - this is a stereotype of behavior that a person demonstrates in similar, usually problematic situations. Often, we ourselves attract problems and we behave the same in them, without even realizing it. Playing out a situation on stage, we act spontaneously and therefore find new ways of behavior that help us act in a completely new way, easily and effectively

Psychodrama is a method of psychotherapy in which clients continue and complete their actions through theatricalization, role-playing, dramatic self-expression. Both verbal and non-verbal communication are used. Several scenes are played out depicting, for example, memories of specific past events, unfinished situations, internal dramas, fantasies, dreams, preparation for upcoming situations with possible risks, or involuntary manifestations of psychological states “here and now.” These scenes either approximate a real life situation or bring out internal mental processes. If required, other roles can be taken on by group members or inanimate objects.

Through the stage performance of episodes from his life (past, present and future), a person is able to use his spontaneity and creativity to enter contact with his own past and acquire skills that will become necessary for him in the future. Zerka Moreno calls this process “a way to live with impunity, despite the mistakes made.”

The main thing in psychodrama is action. Moreno himself called psychodrama “a method in which the truth of the soul is learned in action.” Most of us are accustomed to mentally delving into problems in order to get to the bottom of them, analyze, look for the reasons for their occurrence and draw certain conclusions. Psychodrama transfers the problem into action.

Psychodrama is the world's first method of group psychotherapy, created by Jacob Levy Moreno. It is one of the classic methods of modern psychotherapy and has a well-developed technical toolkit.
Psychodrama is based on the idea that for the study of a person’s inner world (his internal problems, difficult life situations, issues of professional development, fantasies, etc.) it is more effective to use action, dramatic improvisation than verbal techniques.
Due to its methodological equipment, action-oriented and game, psychodrama opens up new opportunities for the development of spontaneity and creativity in a person, allows one to free oneself from ossified forms of behavior and seemingly hopelessly frozen negative feelings. It is in the release of the energy of spontaneity and creativity, according to Ya. L. Moreno, that the path to harmonization of the inner world lies human, “natural way of self-healing” through self-disclosure.
Modern psychodrama is easily combined with other approaches to psychotherapy; its therapeutic techniques are successfully used in group, family and individual work, as well as in education and management activities.
Psychodrama can be useful for people of different ages, with different individual needs. personal characteristics and problems.
