What is Body-oriented Therapy in simpler terms explained by 4 practicing psihologists.

Ukrainian therapists describe how body-oriented therapy works.

All problems and all traumatic experiences of the past are imprinted in the human body. As a consequence, existing reactions, a person’s awareness of his abilities, his capabilities. A person, even understanding something level of the mind, can react for a long time in the same way, as if according to a template, and this may differ from how he wanted and how it turned out. Any fears, sensations and emotions are bodily, satisfaction and fulfillment of life is dictated by the health of the body. Working with the body, training, developing new skills - as a result, we have healthier reactions and a favorable state. In a healthy Body - a healthy Spirit!

Body psychotherapy is one of the main directions of modern practical psychology. Bodily work is necessary for people who want changes, to solve personal problems, i.e. because the information (help) received can not only be perceived at the level of the intellect, but also embodied* in your life (“into” “flesh”). The method is suitable for everyone. While working with a psychologist, the client, in addition to a consultative conversation, may be offered bodily techniques. The techniques are simple and have psychological meaning. They allow us to more fully diagnose and correct the client’s personal history. A more objective perception of oneself appears. What previously seemed impossible is perceived as real. Reality can be perceived more objectively, right. Having found strength in his body, in himself, gaining confidence in therapy, the client wants to try his strength in everyday life.

The human body always reacts to an emotional state. With negative emotions, muscles tense, heart rate increases, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels rise. And if the emotion is not expressed , then these changes persist. Imagine how much tension is stored in the body of a person who is constantly angry, offended or afraid.
The body-oriented approach is extremely effective when working with emotional problems (irritability, self-doubt, phobias, panic attacks, fear for your health and the health of loved ones), as well as for psychosomatic disorders (vegetative-vascular dystonia, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, peptic ulcers, etc.)
The emotional sphere is not subject to rational control. Repeatedly we hear that the client is already has all the necessary knowledge, understands perfectly what needs to be changed and how, but nothing works out for him. At a critical moment, a person breaks into the usual way of reacting, driven by the emotions that wash over him - anger, fear, anxiety. This is because knowledge and reflection are the result of the activity of the left frontal lobe of the brain. While the right is responsible for emotions. So it turns out that a person corrects one sphere (rational), but a completely different sphere needs correction - emotional. When work is done with bodily sensations, it is the right part of the brain that is activated, the area that needs correction.

Body-oriented psychotherapy is a very pleasant therapy. Soft, delicate intervention, very good when working with psychological trauma. Minimum frustration, maximum pleasure! Very suitable for people who lack pleasure in life or have problems experiencing it (anhedonia). The client, as a rule, lies down, the main requirement is to monitor breathing and not interfere with the therapist’s actions (which can be quite difficult for people with hyper-responsibility and hyper-control). From time to time time we talk with clients to increase awareness of how bodily clamps are formed - that is, how a person holds himself in an iron vice. Many experience insight when they stop treating their body as a thing, and understand that it is not “My throat is tight,” and this is “I’m squeezing now, suppressing sobs.” Ideal therapy for making up for a basic defect and for those who are not strong in verbal dialogue. Very resourceful! According to my inner feelings, 40 minutes of body-oriented psychotherapy leaves the impression as if I went to a sanatorium for a couple of days and underwent a course of physical therapy there... Intensively restores resources and gives inspiration to face internal problems... From my experience: one is not enough working with the body, you need a mix of bodily and analytical practices, which is what I do in my project “Body. Dance. Gestalt”. I recommend it to everyone, especially pregnant women and women with anorgasmia.

The body stores the memory of all its life experiences. It undoubtedly reacts to all our joys and sorrows. And if unpleasant situations occur in life, then short-term memory can forget. The body remembers. And in such cases, when the memory has forgotten, but the body remembers, body-oriented therapy is used to remember the situation. And the use of subsequent therapy methods allows you to integrate these memories into a useful experience.
